Maritime Fleet Tracking & OT Security
A regional shipping operator needed real-time fleet tracking and vessel OT security across 45 vessels operating in satellite-dependent environments. MEAICON delivered edge-compute nodes on every vessel, post-quantum-ready telemetry links, and a shore-side fleet operations centre with 99.99 percent uptime.
The challenge
What the client needed
A regional shipping operator managing a fleet of 45 cargo and tanker vessels across the Gulf, Red Sea, and East African shipping lanes faced escalating operational and security challenges. Vessel tracking relied on intermittent satellite position reports with gaps of up to six hours, leaving the operations centre blind during critical transit windows. Port OT systems — cargo handling automation, ballast management, and navigation — had no unified security monitoring, leaving them exposed to operational technology attacks that could disable critical shipboard systems.
The operator needed a platform that could process telemetry at the edge — on each vessel — rather than depending on continuous satellite bandwidth. They also required post-quantum-ready cryptography to protect long-term operational data confidentiality, and geo-fencing to enforce compliance with regulated maritime zones where different data sovereignty rules applied. The existing shore-side operations centre suffered frequent outages during peak traffic, and there was no unified view of fleet status across all 45 vessels.
The security dimension added further complexity. Several vessels in the fleet had experienced suspected OT system intrusions — navigation systems displaying anomalous data and cargo handling automation triggering unscheduled cycles. The operator needed continuous OT monitoring across all vessels, not just position tracking, and the ability to isolate compromised systems remotely before they could affect physical operations or vessel safety.
Our approach
How we engaged
MEAICON began with a vessel-by-vessel OT assessment across the fleet, mapping each ship's operational technology systems, connectivity profile, and physical risk environment. We identified which vessels operated in high-piracy zones requiring hardened physical security and which had sufficient satellite bandwidth for real-time telemetry. The architecture was designed in two parallel tracks: the vessel edge computing layer and the shore-side fleet operations centre.
Our approach prioritised autonomous edge operation. Each vessel's edge node would process telemetry locally, maintaining a complete operational picture even during satellite outages lasting days. Post-quantum-ready cryptography was applied to all telemetry links, and geo-fencing rules were embedded in the edge nodes to automatically adjust data handling when vessels crossed into regulated maritime zones.
- Vessel-by-vessel OT assessment across 45 ships in the Gulf and East African lanes
- Edge-compute node deployment with grid-independent operation for up to 14 days
- Post-quantum-ready cryptographic links for all vessel-to-shore telemetry
- Shore-side fleet operations centre with high-availability architecture and 24/7 monitoring
The solution
What we delivered
The delivered platform is a maritime edge computing network where every vessel runs an autonomous edge node. Each node processes position, navigation, cargo, and OT telemetry locally, maintaining a real-time operational picture regardless of satellite connectivity status. The edge nodes operate grid-independent for up to 14 days, buffering telemetry and integrity logs for transmission when satellite links are restored.
Behind the vessel layer, MEAICON deployed a shore-side fleet operations centre with high-availability architecture. The centre aggregates telemetry from all 45 vessels into a unified dashboard, with automated alerting for route deviation, OT anomaly detection, and regulated zone compliance. Post-quantum-ready cryptography protects all vessel-to-shore links, and geo-fencing rules embedded in each edge node automatically adjust data handling when vessels cross into zones with different sovereignty requirements. The operations centre achieved 99.99 percent uptime, eliminating the outages that had previously blinded fleet managers during peak transit periods.
